ALASKA
- PORTS OF CALL: ANCHORAGE (WHITTIER)
 |
As gateway to the bustling city of
Anchorage, Whittier is a small community that still enjoys a near wilderness
state, as it was inaccessible by road until the year 2000. Surrounded by
snow capped peaks, Whittier sits near an impressive glacier and is one of
Princess' newest ports of call.

FORGOTTEN BY WAR
Established as a World War II port for cargo and troops of the Alaskan
Command, Whittier is home to two massive housing structures created for port
workers of the time. The town remained an active government port until 1960.
Now, it's 290 residents make use of the port for both the fishing and
tourism industries.
YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE
The town was once accessible only by boat or via a war-era railway tunnel.
Recently, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel was enhanced to accommodate
highway traffic as well as rail. This tunnel is now the longest highway
tunnel in North America at a staggering two and a half miles.
PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND
From Whittier, every Princess ship on the Voyage of the Glaciers itinerary
will experience pristine Prince William Sound. With it's abundance of marine
life and magnificent tidewater glaciers, you will be amazed with it's scenic
beauty.
