A lifelong dream came true for my husband, Ed, and me this past April when we traveled to a place where the sun rises first in the world.  We felt privileged to be a part of the Inaugural Sailing of Viking River Cruises, Viking Century Sky.  Our all inclusive 9-day trip took us from Beijing to Shanghai, which not only included astonishing attractions dating back to 5000 B.C., but also introduced us to an extraordinary vision into the 21st century for China.

When I realized how much we accomplished in just nine days I was in awe of it all.  Time flew by as we marveled at one treasure after another.  This itinerary, clearly intended for the adventurous traveler, was physically challenging and required dexterity and endurance. Ed and I were proud to have been worthy and spirited explorers.

Highlights in Beijing included the Pandas at the Zoo; climbing the legendary Great Wall; and a visit to the famous Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The weather in Beijing was a bit chilly with intermittent rain and temperatures in the 50’s, but our adrenaline kept us warm.  There were two ways to ascend the Great Wall; one side was very steep and more difficult to climb.  Either way, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. If you plan to take this trip in early spring, bring a warm jacket, gloves and a sturdy umbrella.  Our extraordinary day was complete when we sat down for a traditional Chinese dinner and appreciated the Beijing Opera.

In Xi’an we were in awe of the work in progress on China’s greatest archeological discovery; the Terra Cotta Army.  Regarded as the most significant archaeological excavation of the 20th century, the Terra Cotta Army extends over an area of 16,300 square meters and contains over 7,000 pottery soldiers, horses, chariots and weapons.  The soldiers themselves are incredibly realistic and awe-inspiring.  This is a miraculous tour, which should not be missed.

Traveling up the Yangtze River was a breathtaking experience with its misty landscapes, world-famous gorges, bamboo grooves and archeological treasures lining its banks.  Our first stop at the Shibaozhai Temple was a most spectacular sight where a 12-story wooden pagoda stands 720 feet above the river. Our climb to the top of this Ming Dynasty architectural marvel awarded us an awesome view of the river.

We then disembarked our ship and boarded a smaller vessel for an excursion through the Lesser Three Gorges.  Knowledgeable guides gave us a running commentary and explained what was happening as the Chinese opened dams to flood areas.  The ongoing construction of new towns will provide places for people to live on higher ground.  Viking River Cruises developed an enchanting area at the end of the third gorge to treat passengers to a delightful picnic lunch. What an exceptional day to take photos of beautiful scenery, learn about the history and culture of this exotic land and visit with new friends.

Viking River Cruises offers several itinerary options ranging from nine to18-nights These are all-inclusive journeys, which depending on the number of nights, include all accommodations at 5-star hotels, 12-18 tours with private English-speaking guides, 25-47 meals, Welcome Cocktail & Farewell Dinners, Unique Cultural Highlights, Fully escorted vacation from airport arrival to departure, all intra-China flights and appropriate hotel/airport/ship transfers, and Payment of all port charges.  If you have the time, I highly recommend additional days in Shanghai and Hong Kong, as there is so much more to see and do in both cities.

The new Viking Century Sky built in 2004 carries up to 306 passengers.  It is the newest and largest international tourist vessel on the Yangtze.  At 415 feet long, the ship has five decks and a crew of 168.  The 153 all-balcony cabins include a private bathroom and shower with enclosed glass doors, T.V., A/C, in-room safe and hair dryers. Standard cabins are 221 square feet, which are the largest afloat and very comfortable.  Junior Suites are 241 square feet and there are six suites that are a spacious 332 square feet.  This modern vessel boasts many of the conveniences familiar on most large ships including a lovely restaurant, featuring international cuisine, an observation lounge & bar, coffee bar, gym, sauna, business center, sun deck, gift shop, laundry service, beauty salon and doctor.

According to the World Tourism Organization, China will be the world’s top tourism destination by 2020, with over 210 million visitors projected every year.  It struck me as almost eerie to see construction sites everywhere and the remains of the shacks where everyday workers once lived. I would be happy to share more of my experiences if you are interested in this extraordinary itinerary.  Several cruise lines including Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Princess Cruises and Holland America Lines offer spectacular itineraries in Asia as well.
